The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act was enacted into law in 2009 (Blumenthal, 2011). The act contains two major components; adoption of health information technology and sealing of loopholes in the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 (Blumenthal, 2011). Before 2009, hospitals in the country could not share patient data, yet it is critical in medical decision-making. Hospital collected and stored patient data on paper records. Due to use of analogue data management approaches, the USA had a poor healthcare system. HITECH Act encouraged the use of health information technology to improve healthcare in the country.
