INTL508 – The Real Threat of Lone Wolf or Small Groups to any Industrialized Nation

Paper Details

To complete this assignment you will need to first work your way through the course simulation.  Your essay responses should pull from your simulation experience, BUT NOT BE BASED ON IT.  Your research of presented concepts within the simulation are the key. As you work to complete the essays below please be sure you judiciously incorporate references in order to 1) to give credit to the originator of the idea, 2) back up and enhance the accuracy of your claims, 3) point out bodies of research that inform your essay, and 4) help readers pursue their own line of research (Turabian 2013).  A reference should appear at the end of each sentence where “you use any idea, data, or method attributable to any source you consulted” (Turabian 2013, 136).Turabian, Kate L. 2013. A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations: Chicago Style for Students & Researchers. 8th ed. The University of Chicago Press.

As you proof read your assignment I encourage you to work with Belcher, Wendy Laura. 2009. “Editing Your Sentences”

Proceed next through the decision making process, enter your analytical process, gaps of information, and foreign capabilities. (you will then proceed through indicators/decision-making processes for each day of the simulation)

Develop a hypotheses then continue answering the questions and proceed with the decision making process.

At the end of the simulation you will receive your score; this is for your own information and it will not be taken into consideration in your essay responses.

Simulation Essay Instructions:

This simulation reinforced the real threat of lone wolf or small groups to any industrialized nation.  Mark Thompson, in a 2013 TIME magazine article highlighted the very real danger and unpredictability of this threat (http://nation.time.com/2013/02/27/the-danger-of-the-lone-wolf-terrrorist/).  Considering the simulation and the Thompson reference, what are the key attributes of the “lone wolf” threat vector?  What can law enforcement and national security/national intelligence agencies do to address this issue?  Is this an attack vector that you really can’t see coming? Support your assessment with peer reviewed references.

ANSWER:

The threat of terrorism is on the rise in the world following the rise of terror groups in parts of the Middle East and Africa. Major terrorist groups, such as Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), have staged attacks in leading industrialized nations. Other terrorist groups, such as Boko Haram in Nigeria and Al-Shabaab in Somalia, have also been advancing their operations by growing their networks and staging attacks[1]. Importantly, the mode of operation in terrorism is constantly changing to increase the success rate. Lone wolf attacks have been on the rise in the recent past. They involve a terror attack that is executed by one terrorist. Lone wolf attacks are advantageous to large group attacks because they can involve a sympathizer, supporter, or a terrorist who has been radicalized through the internet. Terrorists could also use small groups, such as less than five attackers because of their convenience. Industrialized nations are at a greater risk of being attacked by lone wolves or small terror groups because of their stand and efforts to address terrorism. Though industrialized nations face increased security threat from lone wolves, they can involve the community and gather intelligence to prevent and thwart any likely attacks.

Attributes of Lone Wolf Threat

Lone wolves and small groups of terrorists are identifiable through their intentions. In industrialized nations, such as the United States and the United Kingdom, the population is diversified. In that case, security agencies cannot … To continue reading, click on the button below.
