DSM-5 has a dedicated section for somatic and related disorders. The section emphasizes on the need to make a diagnosis on somatic disorder based on positive signs and symptoms as opposed to the absence of medical explanation for somatic symptoms, which was the focus of the earlier versions of DSMs. Notably, these symptoms include abnormal thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in response to those symptoms (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
