It is with no doubt that culture transcends what we have come to know as ethnicity. In other words, ethnicity only makes up one dimension of a person’s culture (how much of that culture is a different discussion). One cultural aspect that is independent of ethnic background or preferred ethnic preferences is that of poverty. Poverty is a sociocultural phenomenon that is easily overlooked in the therapeutic context. Given your readings this week please share your understanding of the relationship between poverty, people, and the presentation of symptomology directly tied to mental illness. In addition, please share how you as a future therapist would account for poverty while providing therapy to those identified as poor. To some extent, culture has an inclination toward poverty. The theory of culture of poverty indicates that poverty results from people’s values and cultural norms. To that extent, people who are considered poor have detrimental cultural values compared to those that are considered well-up.
