  • Based on the historical facts given in this module, assess if the American Civil War was inevitable.
  • Analyze if the United States Supreme Court can settle legal and moral issues through judiciary review. In your response, provide a documented example of a modern parallel of a legal or moral issue settled by the United States Supreme Court.

ANSWER

The Compromise of 1850 comprised of 5 laws, all of which were passed in 1850 (Corbett et al, 2018). It was created to address the issues of territorial expansion and slavery. Herein, the compromise resulted in California entering the union as a free state, the creation of a territorial government in Utah, the establishment of a boundary between New Mexico and Texas, and the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act (Corbett et al, 2018). Also, the compromise effectively ended the slave trade in Washington.
