In this assignment, you will develop two separate infographics (informative posters) to discuss two separate health issues relevant to the LGBT communities. In each infographic you will discuss:

What is the health problem?
Which group(s) are most likely to be at risk?
What social/behavioral/health system determinants affect this?
Identify at least two potential interventions/activities the community, community health agency, community health nurse could offer to prevent and or support this health issue
What resistance might be met in implementing the intervention/activity?

Overview

The 1970s brought in an era of gay liberation and a demand for equitable treatment for the LGBT population. Culturally sensitive healthcare for this population has significantly lagged behind other social changes.

Discrimination has led to significant health issues for the LGBT population. Community health nurses are increasingly called upon to provide support and services to the LGBT population. An understanding of specific health problems associated with this population will lead to effective intervention and support.

ANSWER:

The lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community have different sexual orientations than the traditional perception of masculinity and femininity. Their liberation in the 1970s brought to light the health challenges that they were experiencing. The group deserves medical attention in a similar magnitude to the people who identify with the traditional sexual orientation. Community health nurses could help address the health issues affecting the LGBT community members by offering health education, referring them for specialized medical attention, and guiding them through behavior (health-related) change. Notably, LGBT community members could shy away from visiting health facilities because of perceived discrimination. A community health nurse’s visit to homes could be the only assistance that LGBT people would receive, considering they face numerous health issues.
