The United States faces an increased security threat from terrorism despite embracing proactive law enforcement efforts and counter-terrorism initiatives. September 11, 2001, terrorist attack brought to the fore the magnitude of the threat that the country faced. The attack indicated a trend in indiscriminate targeting among international terrorists. Since then (2001), terrorist groups have evolved in form and mode of operations. The terrorism threat has more than doubled as terrorist groups restructure their operations to reach more people.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) classifies the terrorism threats faced by the United States into domestic and international categories. The domestic category entails right-wing and left-wing groups that embrace anti-government beliefs. International threats entail the formalized terrorist groups, jihad movement, and state sponsors of international terrorism (US Department of Homeland Security, September 2019). The US faces the most serious terrorist threat from Sunni Islamic extremists like Osama Bin Laden, who was leading the Al-Qaeda group. International terrorist groups pose the second most significant threat. They include groups like the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), Al-Qaeda, and Palestinian Hamas (US Department of Homeland Security, September 2019). The FBI has identified state terrorism sponsors, such as Iran, Iraq, Libya, and Sudan, as major threats (US Department of Homeland Security, September 2019).
