(Answer) PSYC290 – Week 7 Assignment: Sexually Transmitted Infections in the Elderly

Required Resources
Read/review the following resources for this activity:

  • Textbook: Chapter 18, 19, 20
  • Lesson
  • Minimum of 2 scholarly sources (in addition to course text)

Instructions
A review of the scholarly literature will uncover a prevalence of risky sexual behaviors and a high rate of sexually transmitted infections in individuals over 60 years of age. For this assignment, it is your responsibility to investigate the phenomenon of increased sexually transmitted infections, and you must provide at least 3 well-researched reasons why the elderly are at an increased risk of contracting an STI than their younger counterparts. And finally, provide at least 2 possible solutions to quell this problem.

ANSWER

As long as people are sexually active, they are prone to sexually transmitted infections (STIs). These diseases are generally infections transmitted through oral, vaginal, or anal sex. Adolescents and young adults have always been seen as the ones with risky sexual behaviors, and therefore, efforts to control the spread of STIs have concentrated on these populations. Moreover, the elderly tend to exhibit risky sexual behaviors considering most of them are divorced or their partners have died, hence they feel the need to fulfill their sexual desires with other people. Hence, the elderly are at an increased risk of contracting STIs than younger people because of a lack of adequate sexual awareness, screening, and testing among the elderly, risky sexual behaviors, and biological susceptibility. This problem can be solved by developing practices and policies to increase STI awareness in the elderly population and increasing the awareness of health care providers about the importance of screening the elderly.
