The study by Thomson et al. (2013) uses a quantitative research design and has a clear purpose. The researchers wanted to understand how the health-related quality of life of partners affects their role and ability to support patients. Although a patient’s health improves after surgery it is important to know what role partners play in post-operative care (Thomson et al., 2013). In this case, researchers want to understand how pre-operative physical and emotional health influence the outcomes of post-operative care for both groups.
