The module will explore the following:
• Types of coaching and mentoring such as:
o Developmental coaching
o Performance coaching
o Team coaching
• Case studies and exemplars of coaching and mentoring applied
• The benefits and limitations of internal and external coaching
• The ethics around a range of coaching and mentoring situations
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By completing this module, you will be able to:
1. Critically evaluate a range of coaching and mentoring approaches
2. Examine the contribution of coaching and mentoring to success for individual and team performance
3. Demonstrate a critical awareness of the effects of a coaching culture on an organisation’s success
4. Present work to an appropriate academic standard
ASSESSMENT DETAILS
The assignment is in two parts. The first part asks you to look how coaching and/or mentoring can improve organisational performance, and the second part relates to your impact as a coach or mentor on individuals or teams. Both parts are expected to have an academic underpinning, integrating theory and practice.
The assignment must include a clear structure with an abstract, a list of references and, where appropriate, appendices and diagrams. You must make appropriate use of journal articles and texts. References should follow the Harvard system

Coaching and mentoring is increasingly being considered an effective way of talent development in organizations. Undoubtedly, coaching and mentoring affect organizational performance. Importantly, coaching and mentoring causes behavior change among employees, which then translates to better organizational performance. In that case, for coaching and mentoring to cause an improvement in a firm’s performance, it must have first changed the behaviors and perceptions of employees at a personal level. Though coaching and mentoring are different in approach and methodology, they are crucial in facilitating talent development.

Coaching and mentoring enables employees to achieve the best performance out of themselves. According to Merrick (n.d., 3), at least 71% of Fortune 500 companies are coaching or mentoring their workers. Implementing the approaches (coaching and mentoring) requires a firm to invest monetary resources. Merrick (n.d., 3) argues that firms that invest in coaching and mentoring attract a return on investment (ROI) of at least seven times the initial investment they made.
