In the recent decade, Russia, under the leadership of Vladimir Putin, has intensified its offensive strategies against the United States and Europe. The United States has enjoyed primacy in global politics since the end of the Cold War. The defeat and dwindling from power and the limelight of the Soviet Union caused Russia to take a back seat in global politics and influence. However, the country, under the leadership of Putin, is keen on regaining its position and influence in the world through whatever means available at its disposal. Russia is, therefore, using the resurgence, cyber tactics, and threats to countries in Eastern Europe to regain its position.

Russian Resurgence

Since 2012, Russia has systematically challenged the West with a view of weakening it. Russia is employing a strategy that analysis has called a ‘quiet resurgence’ (Topol, 2018). Its divisive tactics aim to weaken the bond between the United States and Europe, the relationship among European Union members, and undermine the National Atlantic Treaty Organization’s (NATO) solidarity (Topol, 2018). Success in Russia’s effort would mean that it would enjoy increased power and influence within its immediate neighborhood and beyond.

However, Russian resurgence faces a major because of its financial capability compared to that of its antagonists. For instance, Russia has a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of 41.57 trillion, which is only 8% that of the United States (Pedraja, 2019). Besides, Russia’s GDP is comparable to that of mid-sized European nations like Spain and Italy. Its nuclear weapons are at the same level as those of the United States. Though Russia has in the past decade invested in military reforms, its capability and technology sophistication is considerably lower than that of the United States. For instance, Russia’s defense budget $63 billion, while that of China was $168 billion, and the United States was $643 billion (Pedraja, 2019). Due to its financial limitation, Russia has opted to use the strategy of ‘divide and conquer’ in its resurgence (Jasper, 2019).
