ANSWER:
The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) developed the triple aim to optimize healthcare services. The triple aim entails per capita cost, population health, and experience of care. It seeks to improve patient experience, reduce the per capita cost of healthcare, and improve the overall health of the population. IHI acknowledged that improving healthcare requires an informed and reliable healthcare system. Quality in healthcare should entail effective healthcare services that are timely and affordable. Healthcare services should result in a better society with minimal disease burden.

Healthcare institutions should redesign their primary healthcare services and structures so that they can meet the healthcare needs of their clients and improve the overall population health of communities. They should also create and integrate healthcare systems that maximize quality (clinical or otherwise) while controlling costs.

The United States has one of the most expensive healthcare systems in the world. The country spends approximately 17% of its gross domestic product on healthcare, and more than 10% of the population does not have health insurance (Whittington, Nolan, Lewis, & Torres, 2015, 268). Patients seeking services in emergency departments wait for an average of 30 minutes (Whittington, Nolan, Lewis, & Torres, 2015, 268). Disease burden remains high in the United States with heart disease, cancer, accidents, respiratory disease, stroke, and diabetes are among the leading causes of death (Whittington, Nolan, Lewis, & Torres, 2015, 265). A significant number of Americans still experience challenges in the healthcare industry, leading to high prevalence and mortality rates.

The triple aim goals act as a framework for improvement. According to McCarthy & Klein (2010, para 7), continue reading …
