NR305 – Week 6 Discussion: Reflection on Nursing Assessment for Violence

Reflect on your current or prior practice experiences.

  • Paragraph One
    • Patients of any age, gender, cultural background or socio-economic status can be victims of violence. Consider a patient population you are currently working with or have worked with in the past. For what type of violence might they be at risk? What are some related findings that might alert you to investigate further?
  • Paragraph Two
    • Screening for signs of violence and abuse is a part of patient health history assessments. Have you observed the questions being asked by nurses or have you asked them to patients? Do you believe these screenings are typically completed in detail? Explain your answer.

ANSWER

 I previously worked in the Emergency Department and felt a great responsibility to assess for interpersonal violence. I encountered victims of violence across the lifespan from different socioeconomic backgrounds. I have cared for many women presented multiple times with minor traumatic injuries that feared seeking further help related to fear. However, I made a conscious effort to educate them on local resources if they decide to reach out for help in the future. I also encountered men that had been shot or stabbed by their significant other. Generally, these men would downplay their injuries and refuse to press charges. Finally, I cared for patients that experienced severe abuse that left them with lifelong trauma or caused death. We had a special needs teenager that presented to the ED in cardio-pulmonary arrest.
