Distractions are everywhere. They may include cellphones, multiple alarms sounding, overhead paging, monitors beeping, and various interruptions that disrupt your clinical practice.
Give an example of an ethical or legal issue that may arise if a patient has a poor outcome or sentinel event because of a distraction such as alarm fatigue. What does evidence reveal about alarm fatigue and distractions in healthcare when it comes to patient safety.
ANSWER:
Nurses have a key role in providing care for patients. In the process, nurses are responsible for the quality of the care provided as well as ensuring patient safety. In order to achieve both while performing multiple activities for patient care, nurses develop cognitive mechanisms to maintain their focus on the responsibilities and performance (Monteiro et al., 2015). Unfortunately, there are multiple interruptions to the performance of nurses. While some are unavoidable, some interruptions are risk factors that compromise patient safety.
