PSYU 320 – Week 3 Discussion

Pick two items from the following list and do them.  Be sure to complete all parts of whichever items you choose and be sure to provide appropriate links so other students can access the videos, articles, etc about which you are posting.

  1. Find, or create, and post a video that discusses the the brain’s connected hemispheres/whole brain OR the limbic system. Describe and discuss at least 2 things you learned from the video and at least 2 ways the information may be useful to you, a parent, or a teacher.
  2. Find and post an academic/research article that describes and/or discusses techniques for preventing child maltreatment/abuse.  Discuss at least 2 things you learned from the article and describe and discuss at least 2 things you think society could do to decrease the incidence of this problem in addition to those discussed in the article. If you could, how would you implement these things in society?
  3. Discuss the following:
    1. Describe at least 3 positive effects of early childhood education. Use references that back up your selection of effects.
    2. If you had a choice, to which kind of program listed in your text would you send your child?  Give at least 2 reasons why you would pick this program over the others described.
    3. To what one program would you not send your child?  Why not? Provide at least 1 reason.
  4. Create a Power Point, Prezi or photo essay that discusses one of the following aspects of Piaget’s theory: Obstacles to logic, Conservation, or Preoperational intelligence.  You should have at least 4-5 slides/pictures with captions and a slide with references.
  5. Find, or create, a video or podcast that discusses at least 3 aspects of Vygotsky’s Social Learning Theory. Discuss at least 2 things you learned from the video/podcast, or from creating it, and at least 2 ways the information may be useful to you, a parent, or a teacher.
  6. Find and post a podcast/audio file that discusses sex differences in emotional regulation. Describe and discuss at least 2 things you learned from the podcast/audio file and discuss at least 2 questions you still have about these differences.
  7. Discuss the following:
    1. Describe two different kinds of discipline that could be used by parents to correct negative behavior.
    2. Discuss how they are likely to affect children. Discuss at least 2 potential effects for each type. Use references to support these effects.
    3. What one type of discipline do you think is best to use? Give at least 2 reasons why you think this is the best kind of discipline.
    4. Which type do you think would be least effective?  Give at least 1 reason why you think it would be least effective.
  8. Do all of the following:
    1. Observe multiple parents and children interacting for at least 20 minutes in a park, mall or someplace similar.
    2. Describe the kinds of parenting styles, as explained by Baumrind, that you observed parents using. Give at least 2 examples from your observation.
    3. Describe the differences you observed in terms of how parents interacted with girls vs. boys. Give at least 2 examples from your observations.
    4. Discuss at least 2 things you learned from this observation.
