PSYU 328 – Week 2 Discussion

This week we are going to debate both sides an issue. This is an important discussion and will require that you log in and participate more than three separate days throughout the week.

There is tremendous controversy regarding diagnosing mental disorders. Some argue that a diagnosis is just a harmful label. Others argue that diagnosis is a crucial way to communicate with other professionals and guide treatment planning.

Select your position either as Pro-Diagnosis or Anti-Diagnosis, and defend (state which side you are on each time you log in) that position throughout the threaded discussion. Once you commit to a position, you cannot change to the other side. The rules of the debate are that each student must “weigh in” and defend their position. Be sure to log in early in the week – in order to encourage ongoing dialogue – and everyone is expected to ask questions and provide responses. Be sure you have replied to all questions that are posed to you during this week’s discussion.

Do not Begin your discussion with “I’m really not in favor of this view of the topic, but…” Even though you may have a personal opinion regarding the topic, your arguments must be cogent and convincing. Put some thought into the issue and provide examples and documentation to support your position. To earn maximum points — use case examples, supportive documentation, or information from any (text book or outside) source – be sure to cite and reference all sources in your response.
